Regional and supraregional programs:
"Swift development program" -
in Annaberg district in former East Germany for the protection of all
existing swift nest sites and the establishment of new nesting opportunities, especially in nest boxes,
combined with a census of the swift population .
For this program our organisation, the "Ornis"-Verein, received a special
award, the "Feldschlösschen-Naturschutzpreis 1994".
Study of a wind farm at Jöhstadt (Annaberg county).

"Plattenthal Bird Trail" - For about 3 years the members of "Ornis" have
developed the Plattenthal nature trail into a bird trail. There we want
to demonstrate practical bird protection by using lots of illustrative
material. On a circuit of roughly 2.5 km (the first part can even be used by
wheelchair-bound persons) there are 19 display boards. Moreover there are
54 nesting aids for birds, 1 nest box for hornets and 2 nest boxes for bats.
Usually in spring bird call identification field trips take place.
"Redpoll Program" - This program is the continuation of a banding program
conducted 1986 through 1990. The first part of the results was already
published (Eck,S.; Schlegel S. u. J., 1996, Zoolog. Abhandlung Museum für
Tierkunde Dresden 49; 95-111).
Aim and content of the program include the collection of facts and
observation results about the morphology and phenology of Redpolls in
the Obere Erzgebirge in Saxony (banding sites are Annaberg, Burkhardtsdorf and
Thalheim).
Assistance in the "Hedgerow Program" of all three German birdbanding stations -
"Ornis"-Verein has taken part in this program since 1994. The banding site
in Annaberg is the highest site participating in this project. The aim of
the project is to document the importance of the structure of these hedges
in our man-made landscape.
Here you can get some of the
banding results.
